Kitchen remodeler in North Shore, NY

The North Shore of Staten Island includes St. George, Stapleton, Tompkinsville, New Brighton, West New Brighton, Port Richmond, and Mariners Harbor. This is the oldest part of the borough, with Victorian-era and early 20th-century homes that carry original woodwork, plaster walls, and construction details that require a different approach than postwar or newer builds. Many homes here are semi-attached or row-style, with shared walls and narrower lots that affect how exterior work is planned. The North Shore's older housing stock means original doors, windows, molding, and fireplaces are often still in place but well past their functional life.

Old Homes, Real Craftsmanship — North Shore Renovations

North Shore homes in St. George, Stapleton, and New Brighton include some of the oldest residential construction on Staten Island. Victorian and early 20th-century homes in these neighborhoods were built with plaster walls, original hardwood trim, and fireplaces that served as the primary heat source. Renovating these homes means working with what is already there rather than treating every wall as a blank slate.

Exterior front door replacement on North Shore semi-attached and row homes requires attention to the original opening dimensions, which often do not match modern pre-hung door sizes. We measure and fit each door to the actual opening, and we match molding profiles to what is already on the home so the finished result looks like it belongs rather than like an afterthought. Doors and molding work on these older homes is detail work, and we treat it that way.

Bathroom renovations in North Shore properties frequently uncover original cast-iron plumbing, hex tile floors, and wall tile that has been in place since the 1930s or 1940s. We remove and replace these systems fully, bringing the bathroom up to current function while keeping the renovation in proportion to the home's overall character. Kitchen renovations in these homes often involve reconfiguring small, closed-off galley layouts that were standard in early 20th-century construction.

Every service, available in North Shore, NY

Doors and molding work is especially relevant on the North Shore, where Victorian and early 20th-century homes have original interior trim that has been painted over, damaged, or removed during past renovations. Exterior front door replacements are common on these older homes, where original wood doors have warped, rotted at the sill, or no longer seal properly against winter drafts. Fireplace restoration and installation is a natural fit in homes that were built with them as the primary heat source. Bathroom renovations in North Shore properties often involve removing original tile and plumbing that has not been touched since the mid-20th century.

My wife and I are senior citizens and we needed a complete renovation of my upstairs bathroom. The old bathroom included a water jets tub which requires you to lift your leg up and over that could lead to a terrible fall. We developed a plan with Jeff and his crew to completely demolish the existing bathroom down to the bare studs. We also eliminated the need to keep the radiator for heat. Since the entire bathroom was open to major improvements. The plumbing and electrical components had to be to be completely replaced. By removing the bathtub we were able to have a virtual step-in shower with overhead and wall components. In addition, we added a portable adjustable wand that can be used whether standing or sitting on the shower bench. The entire bathroom floor - both in and out of the shower along with the shower bench is heated by a program used by the homeowner. We also upgraded our toilet with a Toto Bidet which users can adjust the water heat. We replaced the mirror with a user friendly light mirror combination as well as keeping the humidity off the mirror. By removing the radiator we had Jeff put in a heated towel rack. And in order to replace the heat provided by the radiator, Jeff put in a combination overhead heater component with exhaust fan. Jeff also put in ADA compliant shower bars in and out of the shower area. Jeff also uses an expert in tile installation. And Jeff has deals with Staten Island distributors for a significant price savings. Jeff also uses experts in glass shower door installation. In summation, Jeff and crew were extremely professional and courteous. Another great quality they exhibited was to clean up the work area every day. Therefore, if you need a great price for great work, you can’t go wrong with this great firm.

Jeff and team rebuilt my entire house from the inside out. I had so much work done. Literally every room in my house. My bathroom and kitchen were both remodeled last in the late 80s. My kitchen was dark and enclosed. I had a separate dining room that I never used. He had a stair man who built my stairs out of oak. He even built rooms in my basement. His team was efficient, neat and quick. I recommend them to anyone who needs a contractor. For any job big or small.

I could not be happier getting this bathroom reno done with Hughes Home Improvements. Jeff and his entire crew were always on time, respectful, and genuinely great to work with from estimate to finish. Every part of the job from demo, framing, tile work, plumbing, install and glass was handled by skilled pros who clearly care about the quality of their work and were all really nice. This was a full gut renovation of a 3 piece bathroom, and I was really impressed with how clean and organized the team was. They sealed off the work area to keep dust and mess to a minimum which made a big difference since I was on the same floor working from home during the renovation. Jeff was honest about the pricing and clear about how long the job would take. He was always available by call or text whenever I had a question which made the whole process feel easy. When unexpected issues came up he was flexible and ready with solid workarounds and solutions. I have had some bad experiences with contractors in the past so I always get anxious about renovations. Working with Jeff completely changed that. It feels great to finally have a contractor I can trust and someone I will definitely return to for future projects. Highly recommend.

We contracted Hughes Home Improvements to do a large multi level renovation to our house. They came highly recommended from my neighbor who had a bathroom reno done a few months earlier. We gave Hughes Home Improvement a call. When Jeff came to look at the job and give an estimate we were more than happy with everything. He had great suggestions that we never even considered and it was cost effective as well. Jeff and his crew were always on time, always did everything they said they would do, never cut corners, and were extremely professional. Every morning we would meet and go through what was happening at the job, if we wanted to discuss anything, and he answered all the questions we had. Jeff and his crew were on site everyday until the job was completed. Jeff was always available anytime we called. I would highly recommend Hughes Home Improvement. They take pride in their craft and understand their business. Handing your home to someone is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly but Jeff and his crew were outstanding, trust worthy, and professional.

Kitchen Remodeler FAQ for North Shore, NY

Common questions from North Shore, NY customers about our services, process, and coverage.

Yes. Semi-attached homes in North Shore neighborhoods like Stapleton and New Brighton have exterior door openings that are independent of the shared wall, so a front door replacement does not affect the adjoining unit. We measure the existing opening carefully because older homes often have non-standard rough openings that require a custom-fit or modified pre-hung unit rather than a standard off-the-shelf door.

We install fireplaces and can work with the existing fireplace opening in older North Shore homes. Many Victorian-era homes in St. George and New Brighton were built with decorative fireplaces that were later closed off or converted. We assess the existing structure and install a fireplace unit that fits the opening and meets current safety requirements.

Bathrooms in pre-1950 North Shore homes often have original cast-iron plumbing, hex mosaic tile floors, and wall tile that has been in place for decades. A full renovation involves removing all of this, updating the plumbing supply and drain lines, and installing new tile, fixtures, and a vanity. The process takes longer than a renovation in a newer home because the original materials require more careful removal.

Yes. Matching existing molding profiles is part of how we approach door and molding work in older North Shore homes. We measure the existing casing and baseboard profiles and source or mill matching material so the new installation reads as part of the original home rather than a visible patch. This matters most in rooms where the original trim is still intact on the other walls.
